True North is a weekly, online advisory group for teen boys and any male identifying teens. In a bonded cohort of 8-12 middle schoolers, we tackle the ups and downs of adolescence together. Through games, meaningful questions, deep listening and reflection, we create a powerful container for boys to develop lifelong social-emotional skills while supporting one another along the journey.
WHAT IS TRUE NORTH?
WHY TRUE NORTH?
Boys today are facing unprecedented pressure. The alarming influence of hyper-masculine social media accounts and video games, pressure to conform to impossible physical standards and expectations of emotional stoicism all contribute to worse outcomes across a variety of measures for boys. They are performing worse in school, reporting more loneliness and depression, and becoming more socially isolated. We need to do better for our boys.
40%
OF TEENS REPORTED PERSISTENT FEELINGS OF SADNESS OR HOPELESSNESS IN THE PAST YEAR.
Boys are 4 times more likely to commit suicide & 3 times more likely to become addicted.
-Scott Galloway, NYU Professor and Best Selling Author
“The mortality impact of being socially disconnected is similarto that caused by smoking 15 cigarettes per day”
- Dr. Vivek Murthy, United States Surgeon General
Brain research shows us that social and emotional learning is an essential tool to protect teens from depression and isolation.
20%
OF TEENS WILL EXPERIENCE A DEPRESSIVE EPISODE BY AGE 17, WITH BOYS LESS LIKELY TO SEEK HELP THAN GIRLS.
“BELONGiNG isn’t a luxury - it’s a foundation”
-Chris Balme, Author of “Finding the Magic in Middle School”
THE TRUE NORTH WAY
We believe that a true sense of belonging is the springboard to living an emotionally intelligent, skills-rich and purposeful existence. We also believe in the importance of creating models for positive masculinity. We intend to invite male speakers to reinforce healthy male norms for our boys and re-frame the narrative of toxic masculinity. Lastly, we believe in fostering our boys' connection to each other as they navigate the challenges of adolescence.
LIVED EXPERIENCES THAT
FOSTER CONVERSATION
At True North, our aim is to address the issues that matter most to today’s boys. Ideally, the content of our weekly groups is drawn from their lived experiences. However, we also come equipped with Argonaut School’s curriculum, Diving Boards, to help navigate conversations around:
Managing Relationships
Prioritizing Mental Health
Setting Boundaries
Finding Balance
Mindfulness & Reflection
Positive Masculinity
